Road Maintenance>Roadside Spray Program

Roadside Spray Program

Program History:

In April of 1999 the Stevens County Department of Public Works, in accordance with Washington State Laws, began a Roadside Spray Program , with the intent of attempting to effectively manage roadside vegetation within County road right-of-ways. The Stevens County Commissioners, at that time, adopted a "Roadside Integrated Vegetation Management Program" which committed the Public Works Department to implement a variety of vegetation control measures, as resources become available. The yearly program typically includes manual and mechanical cutting of brush, mowing and reseeding of shoulders and ditches, and application of herbicides.

The Roadside Spray Program covers approximately 1500 miles of the County Road System each year. Application of the various herbicides used do conform with Federal and State regulations. For daily information about which area of the County is being sprayed, contact the spray hotline at the following telephone number 685-0661.

Those Desiring To Maintain Their Own:

Those residents who do not want herbicides applied to the road right-of-way on their property, may contact the Stevens County Weed Board to obtain an agreement allowing the owner to maintain the adjacent road right-of-way. This agreement requires the owner to control noxious weeds and to erect signs posting the frontage of their property as an "Owner Will Maintain" area. Property owners may obtain agreements or more information from the Stevens County Weed Board Office located at 230 Williams Lake Road or by telephone at 684-7590.

Equipment Used:

The Stevens County Department of Public Works utilizes various equipment to accomplish the task of roadside vegetation management. Two of those pieces of equipment are the spray trucks. These vehicles are single axle drive trucks that are utilized year round as either a spray truck or a plow truck. Every year the trucks are converted into spray vehicles in a process that allows Stevens County to better utilize the vehicles we have. The trucks, once converted, hold up to 1,300 gallons of water, that, through a series of pumps, is mixed with the various sprays being used.
