Road Maintenance>Department of Corrections Program
| Brief History: | |
| The Stevens County Department of Public Works,
and the Department of Natural Resources, in the spirit of cooperation,
continue to be committed to a joint effort |
|
| With Stevens County's Department of Public Works personnel resources stretched thin and the Department of Corrections having low risk inmates eager to be given the opportunity to work out in the field it seems like a perfect fit. All inmates involved in the program are "short timers" and work hard to keep the privilege of being allowed to be a part of this program. The useful skills and work ethics the inmates gain while participating in this program will help prepare them for the transition from institutional custody to their respective communities. | |
| Program Costs: | |
| The costs to Stevens County to enter into such a program are far outweighed by the amount of work that is accomplished in a relatively short time. As part of the agreement DNR provides the transportation to and from the work site for the inmates, an onsite supervisor, and the hand tools necessary to accomplish the work. Stevens County is required to provide, in the case of roadside vegetation management, a wood chipper, and flaggers for traffic control. | |
| In Action: | |
| The corrections crew are utilized in the area of roadside vegetation management in various locations in the County. This work involves clearing trees and shrubs within the County's right of way. To see the crew in action first hand is quite impressive as they work at a relatively fast pace and are able to accomplish quite a bit in only a days work. With the assumption that things will continue to run smoothly, both Stevens County Department of Public Works and the Department of Natural Resources look forward to utilizing this program in the future. | |
