Landfill Background

The Stevens County Sanitary Landfill at Kettle Falls opened July 5, 1979. The site is located 1 1/2 miles southwest of the town of Kettle Falls off of Highway 25. As the only municipal solid waste landfill in Stevens County, service is provided to all of Stevens County and portions of Ferry County. By 1997 the site was receiving 26,572 tons of waste a year.

The site area is located on a forested bluff over Lake Roosevelt, a reservoir of the Columbia River. The area is bounded on the east by the Colville River Valley, on the west by Lake Roosevelt, and on the south by the Colville River inlet to Lake Roosevelt. Boise Cascade has a closed wood waste disposal facility immediately adjacent to the east of the closed site and owns property to the north and east of the closed site and the current site. The DNR owns the property to the west of the current site. The Bureau of Reclamation owns property and shoreline south of the landfill property.
